In preparation for any worthy adventure, I love to set the vibe with a playlist . This is a list of my top picks for adventures about survival, the wilderness, and having a gung-ho, adventurous and imaginative outlook towards life.
1. Don Quixote – With John Lithgow
The movie version with John Lithgow. John Lithgow is perfect for this role. Every outing becomes an adventure if you remember to bring your imagination and create your own reality. Life is more fun when you enjoy and embrace your dementia and craziness. When I grow up, I want to be like Don Quixote.
2. The Edge
This movie features Sir Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin- awesome movie about survival, betrayal and wisdom.
3. Harry and the Hendersons
I don’t know why people forget to add this movie to their list. Also a John Lithgow film. This is a movie about life, family, our connection to God’s design and humanity. It’s a feel good movie with a lot of heart and growth – total Dad film.
4. Wild America
Wild America is a coming of age story loosely based on the life of Marty Stauffer, a world renouned wildlife photographer and videographer. This movie is about family, following dreams, the beauty of the great outdoors and so much more. It’s fun Americana adventure with a ton of nostalgia.
5. Jeremiah Johnson
Everyone should know the story behind the famous meme. Robert Redford with a beard and an attitude to survive. Awesome.
6. Without a Paddle
This is a teenage survival comedy and the only one that comes to mind. Still it’s fun and funny.
7. The River Wild
The River Wild is an adventure thriller about a family divided, a father in crisis, and a river rafting trip. I won’t spoil it for you. Go watch it.
8. The Bear
The Bear is a story of an orphaned bear cub befriended and protected by an adult male grizzly as hunters pursue them through the wilderness.
9. Dances With Wolves
One word “tatanka”. This movie depicts a time in US history during westward expansion and the Civil War, a man at war with himself, and in search of a new way to live. It is one of Kevin Costner’s finest performances.
10. Alone in The Wilderness
A well narrated movie about Dick, Proenneke, a man who built a cabin and lived in the remote Twin Lakes region of Alaska for 35 years and documented his journey on film and writing. This is a new favorite of mine. I love leaving this movie just run on a loop in the background as ASMR, it is so peaceful and profound.
11. Last Stop For Paul
This is a funny movie about life, death and travel. Two friends travel the world sprinkling the ashes of their friend Paul. If you’re curious about Thailand and world travel, this is a fun one.
12. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Faced with losing his job and his colleague’s job, Walter Mitty, goes on a transformative and imaginative journey that is simply extraordinary. If you’re in a funk, and need a reminder of what life can be, this is a great movie with an even better soundtrack.
13. Outsourced
Outsourced is a movie about a guy whose job is outsourced to India, and he must travel there to train his replacement. This is an eye opening fun ride.
14. A Walk In The Woods
This movie is a retelling of Bill Bryson’s adventure hiking the Appalachin Trail. The book is required reading but the movie brings a fun flavor to the mix as well.
Conclusion
No matter your stage in life, there is an adventure for everyone. I encourage you to cultivate passion and quixotic foolishness in your preparation for adventure. Life is too short to be so serious or deprive yourself of journeys inward and outward.
